Julie (Burton) Perry/Choir Manager
is happy to be Managing the Maranatha 2nd Generation choir and working with her twin sister Barbara Powell (Director) and step-mother Tammy Burton-Strickland (Accompanist). Like her sister, Julie’s first Maranatha Tour was when she was 9 years old and the touring choir was under the direction of her father Dr. Stephen J. Burton. Those were the years prior to the formation of Maranatha 2nd Generation – so you might say that Julie and her sister Barbara were the first ‘2nd Generation’ members! Julie sang in the Touring Choir for 6 seasons and in recent years has also served on the Maranatha Music Ministries Board of Directors.
Julie Perry is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of James Madison University with a Bachelor of Music in Music Industry. As a professional singer Julie has been a guest soloist in many different locations throughout the state. Local audiences will recognize her from the decade she spent as the Music Director at Salem Baptist Church, from numerous roles at the Riverside Dinner Theater, and from her work with the Fredericksburg Chamber Chorale. A private voice teacher for many years Julie’s students have been selected for the country’s most prestigious Universities and Conservatories and although currently working full-time in Tourism Marketing for the City of Fredericksburg, she continues to be a respected adjudicator for regional and state-level music education competitions. Julie is also the City Staff Representative on the Fredericksburg Arts Commission. Like her role on the Arts Commission Julie considers her time Managing 2G a wonderful opportunity to combine her personal passions with her professional Arts Management skills.
Barbara (Burton) Powell/Choir Director
is a veteran music educator who brings her own excitement and passion with her into Maranatha 2nd Generation Choir. Barbara has a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from James Madison University with a concentration in Piano and Voice. She has been a Choral Music Teacher since 1997. She is currently the Choral Director at Walker-Grant Middle School, in Fredericksburg City, where she has built the choir program over the last 7 years. Her High School and Middle School choirs have received many Superior ratings at District Choral Assessment and other choral competitions. She Is the Walker-Grant Middle School 2015 teacher of the year. Barbara is also an accomplished choral accompanist who has played for choirs at many schools in Stafford, Spotsylvania and Fredericksburg. She has played in worship at a variety of local churches including over 10 years on staff at Salem Baptist Church in Spotsylvania. She has accompanied All-County and All-District Choir events as well as taught many private students in piano and voice. Barbara has been the Accompanist for the Maranatha Touring Choir and the Maranatha Gospel Choir at different times in their history.
Barbara began her journey in the Maranatha Music Ministries Family when she was just 9 years old. She and her sister toured with the Touring Choir while their father was the Music Director. In her 8th grade year, she joined Maranatha as a singer and it has been a part of her life ever since. Barbara stayed in Maranatha Touring Choir until her college years when she transitioned to being the Accompanist for that group. She left MTC only to take on the roll of directing the Maranatha 2nd Generation Choir. Barbara fell in love with a fellow Maranatha Alumni and Chaperone and the two of them married in the fall of 2002. 45 Maranatha 2nd Generation students sang at Barbara and Scott’s wedding. Barbara continued to music direct M2G for 2 years until her twins were born. In the 10 years since, Barbara has stayed a part of the organization – playing with her husband in Maranatha Gospel Choir and watching the ministry change and grow. After working last year with Brian Lamb, she is now incredibly happy to be back as one of the Music Directors of Maranatha 2nd Generation – and to be conducting while her own children and her niece are a part of the choir. This Ministry has had a huge impact on her life and her family. She hopes and prays that it will impact the lives and families of many more students in the years to come.
Tammy Burton – Strickland/Accompanist
is happy to be coming back to Maranatha 2nd Generation for her second time as choir accompanist. She served in the role previously when her daughter Barbara directed the group from 2000-2002. A recently retired music educator Tammy taught Elementary Music to students in Stafford County for over 30 years and brings her considerable experience in both school and church music to the organization. A graduate of Mary Washington College (UMW) Tammy is a respected accompanist and choir director herself. She has been on staff at several Fredericksburg area churches during her musical career including Goshen Baptist Church, Zoan Baptist Church and Salem Baptist Church. The two even delayed the start of their honeymoon and by seeing the Maranatha Touring Choir off on their summer tour the day after their wedding. Tammy’s daughter Jessica Willis Gourley also sang in Maranatha for many years and now Tammy is pleased to be accompanying 2G with three of her six grandchildren singing.
